Goal Setting Towards A Colorful 2017

So, it is that time of the year a gain, when people say they will do new things in the new year. You set goals and hope to achieve them. I have said in the past that I do not make New Year resolutions. With 52 weeks in a year, why would should I wait for a year to end to change my life? In order to make a change, you have to start with your mind. Thereafter you make a plan on how you are going to execute it. Most people make plans with no intention of execution. Others make plans because they do not want to be left out of the resolution bandwagon. For they fear, if they are asked what plans they have for the year—saying nothing does not sound good. What if you have no goals? Or just one? Maybe you want to be a better person, business partner, employee, spouse, entrepreneur or writer than you were the previous year. It doesn’t have to be something huge. It should be something that resonates with you.

Monversation 2017

During boxing day, I spent time with a dear friend and she asked my company and I what were our highlights of 2016. That made me smile, instead of focusing on the negative, she decided to focus on the things that got her through 2016. 2016 was so rough for me personally. On the other hand, there were lots of mercies and there is a lot I learnt. About friendship, people, life and balance.

When people transition into the New Year, some still hold resentment towards people or events that happened in the past. Some may have been truly traumatic. In reality, it’s a recycled year with old things that may prevent you from living fully. By living fully—it is a known fact, that when you let go of things that do not serve you, you create space for new things to fulfil you. It could be through spring cleaning or clearing out your closet, now apply that to your life. There are seasonal people, things and events that have outlived their purpose. Let them go! One thing for sure is I learnt to make use of what I have. Call it the minimalist mind-set—seriously, it really works!

Sometimes we do not have to wait for gadgets to do the work that we need to do, we can use what we have. I had ordered myself studio equipment for my podcasts way before Christmas and I am yet to receive the package. When I think of the effort I put in and budget– it was a black Friday sale so it was a steal. I was greatly disappointed but, with my experience with Royal Mail, I was not too surprised. Decided, instead of focusing and waiting for the equipment I have to make do with what I have. It may not sound like I how I intended it to sound, but it’s important for me to share my voice. When I do get the equipment, I will obviously be happy. It would fulfil my goal of having my own recording studio but for now–I am content with my makeshift studio. The same thing with life, we wait for that perfect moment or perfect time to do something. JUST DO IT! Take the plunge. Everyone started from somewhere, if they didn’t fail and keep trying some things we take for granted might not exist today. There’s this Kenyan Javelin champion–Julius Yego who learnt how to throw via YouTube. Coming from a community where most people were runners, people thought he was crazy and told him to stop and just run. The power of knowledge is out there if you want to educate yourself. Don’t keep saying in another lifetime. That reminds me of a movie I watched where Meryl Streep played  Florence Foster Jenkins a singer who couldn’t sing. I laughed so hard at the reaction of the pianist’s shock of her flat tone. They still recorded their song, at that time, it was considered comical but that wish to record resulted in a movie telling us about Florence’s life story. She was no Nightingale!

Do not underestimate your power to do something you dream of. Our realities are relative. My achievement to you could be considered a failure especially, if I measured myself to someone with half a decade of experience.

This year, Donnasmelange is transitioning. I am going to add a few more things and try to engage with you more. For now, I just want to wish you a Happy 2017! Here’s the first podcast of the year. I breakdown 5 ways on how to easily set your goals as well as let you know what the Monversation is really about. Keep checking in on my social media for updates. Will let you know in due time.

Have the best first week of 2017!

Namaste,
